The Old Jewish Cemetery in Wrocław is an integral part of the history of both the city itself and the Jewish community of Wrocław.

 

During our guided walk, you will learn about the history of this unique 19th century cemetery. The cemetery, overgrown with lush greenery, has become the resting place of many famous personalities, scientists, artists, including the founder of the first workers' party in Germany - Ferdinand Lassall, the famous botanist - Ferdinand Cohn and the author of the first synthetic history of Jews since biblical times - Heinrich Greatz to name but a few.

Due to the variety of symbolism, matzevah decorations and tombstones, it is an unusual place, different from other burial grounds in this part of Europe. The picturesque old Jewish cemetery is a special place of remembrance that tells the story of those who passed away.

Discover the Famous Islands of Wroclaw – the Cathedral Island and the Sand Island. This area is by far one of the most interesting areas of Wroclaw and in fact the oldest part of the city where the history of Wroclaw started over 1100 years ago. You will see and learn more about the pearls of Gothic and Baroque architecture: the Cathedral of John the Baptist, Church of the Holy Cross and other ancient churches of Wroclaw. While walking around the island, our guests have the chance to discover that the Leaning Tower exists not only in Pisa but also in Wroclaw!

Your passionate, local guide will reveal to you fascinating stories and legends of the islands, including scandals and crimes from the past.  You will also witness the present residency of our Bishops and Archbishops, the world’s biggest statue of the Bohemian saint John Nepomuk, and an unforgettable meeting place for lovers – Tumski Bridge.

We will finish our excursion on the Sand Island with the biggest Gothic temple in the city – church of Blessed Virgin Mary.

Such a walk should only be experienced by lovers of dark tales and spine-chilling folklore!

We invite you to take a trip along the trail of crime and punishment. As soon as the sun goes down, Evil Baba will meet us, joined by the city executioner.

Our passionate city guide will reveal the history of Wrocław punishments, which often ended at the gallows. You will learn where the Egyptian mummies were kept in Wrocław, how the shameless poems ended for Long Johnny and all about the convicts from the St. Elizabeth cemetery.

During the trip, you will also visit the 14th century city prison to witness where the city’s offenders were housed.

Where did the city executioner live and who could become one? You will learn the answers to these and other questions by walking with us - along the route of the damned.

The trip is recommended for participants aged 12+.
